Great Sports Name Hall of Fame Nominee - Sherard Clinkscales

Sherard Clinkscales originally came into my life via this Topps 1992 Draft Pick card form. Even as a young child, I remember thinking, "Man, what a thoroughly great name this guy has." Because really...it's amazing. Sherard is a pretty solid beginning, Clinkscales is a terrific ending - this guy has everything.

And his story is actually a pretty happy one after some earlier bumps. He left Purdue in 1992 as a supplemental first round pick of the KC Royals (#31 Overall). He was already walking over 6 guys a game on average, and so he'd need to cut down on his wildness. Well he couldn't and so by 1994, after three years in the minors, Sherard Clinkscales was done as a professional ballplayer.

But he wasn't done in baseball. Clinkscales was a professional scout from 1997-2006 with the Braves, Rays, and Royals, where he actually helped sign a few guys, including current Brave Peter Moylan. But since 2007, Clinkscales has been Pitching Coach/Assistant Coach at Notre Dame, which isn't a bad finish at all for a guy with such a short term career.

  1. I've heard that name 'Clinkscales' somewhere else. Wasn't there a football player named Dexter Clinkscales? Anyway, it's hard not to start laughing when you say 'Clinkscales'. Makes me think of Col. Klink from Hogan's Heroes. Too bad this Sherard Clinkscales doesn't join the army. He could become Col. Clinkscales...ROFL
