Great Sports Name Hall of Fame Nominees - Dean Windass and Nicky Butt

You know, I don't watch a whole lot of soccer, but I might have to start if all of the names are this goofy.

Dean Windass is a striker who has played for many teams over his years but currently plays for the Oldham Athletic club on loan from his hometown Hull City team. Windass is apparently a pretty good scorer but also a controversial guy. He has been sent off three times in one match, once supposedly grabbed an opponents testicles, and even has a potential night club brawl that he's denied (the article has an amazing heading, "Windass - It wasn't me). My favorite story, however, is that Windass recently played in a game versus Leicester where his goalie got the red card and was ejected from the game. Windass, ever the man's man, moved from striker to goalie and made some key saves to give him team a tie. Not too shabby, and it gives me something to cheer for him about that isn't his awesome, potentially flatulent, name.

As for Nicholas "Nicky" Butt, he too has a long and storied career. He is one of only four players to play every season in the Premier League since its inception in 1992. As a defensive midfielder he hasn't had all the goals and glory that Windass has, but he has played for the National team several times and was a captain last season for his current team, Newcastle United, after striker Michael Owen was injured. And if Butt should ever doubt himself, apparently after the 2002 World Cup Pele called Butt "the best player at the tournament." Which, coming from Pele, is impressive.
