D'Brickashaw Ferguson has a pretty great name. And like Earthwind Moreland, I didn't think of his name when I originally made the long list of potential nominees. So thanks go out to my friend Charlene for the nomination here, as D'Brickashaw is easily one of the best first names we've seen nominated to the Hall.
So where did this name come from? Well apparently D'Brickashaw's family watched a lot of television, as his name was taken from a character on the mini series "The Thorn Birds" named Father Ralph de Bricassart. According to the Wikipedia page on Father Ralph, his character is described as being six feet and two inches tall, having perfect proportions, fine aristocratic features, loose black curls, blue eyes, and small and slender hands and feet, and a body that did not settle with age. I personally see D'Brickashaw as a much bigger dude than that, but it's not like his parents could have known that when they first named him.
If you read the plot summary of "The Thorn Birds," it's actually pretty sad, and things don't turn out so well for Father Ralph, but life kind of worked out the opposite for D'Brickashaw. Drafted with the 4th overall pick in 2006, he has since started at Left Tackle for the Jets, combining with Nick Mangold to form one of the better young lines in the league. As if that weren't impressive enough, he's got his own facebook fan page, with a pretty stylin' image for his profile picture. He's a great tackle, he seems like a great dude, and now he's nominated to Ballot 3 of the Great Sports Name Hall of Fame. Best of luck to you D'Brickashaw, both on the football field and in the voting!
