GSNHOF Nominees - Mutombo and Okafor (This One's for Snagamat)

Sean (aka Snagamat) over at Outside the Boxscore has written two posts now that a) hyped GSNHOF and b) mentioned a guy he'd like nominated to the GSNHOF. Sean's an awesome dude who I met in my undergrad days, and so I figured I'd listen and nominate those two guys. Although, to be honest, I probably would have nominated them anyways. Their names?

Chukwuemeka Ndubuisi Okafor (aka Emeka Okafor of the New Orleans Hornets)

and Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo (aka Dikembe Mutombo, recently retired but most recently of the Houston Rockets)

Beyond their African routes and truly awesome names, these guys actually share quite a bit in common. They were both chosen near the top of their draft (Dikembe 4th in 1991, Emeka 2nd in 2004). They were both named to the All Rookie team following their first year. And they're both defense first centers, though Emeka scores more points whereas Dikembe had a lot more blocks.

That's basically it for the similarities though. Emeka, who stands 6'10," has one Rookie of the Year award in his five years of play. Dikembe, who stands 7'2" and wears a size 22 shoe, was an 8 time All Star, 4 time Defensive Player of the Year, and finished his career second all time in blocks and 21st all time in rebounds. Clearly, beyond the awesome names and penchant for defense, Emeka and Dikembe are two pretty different dudes. As a result, this may be the first and last time that Emeka is ever compared to Dikembe. Enjoy it Emeka, as Dikembe was, and still is, the man.
