Enough small time wins - time to show off my biggest Listia expenditure to date - a Tom Brady rookie!

I've posted all sorts of neat cards that I won on Listia for under 100 credits, but since I have close to 30,000 credits I have the coin to make bigger purchases.  Usually I'm pretty gun shy, since I want to save for stuff I really want (like I just missed an authentic game worn full jersey of a Cowboys guy that I would've won for 25,001 but at the time I only had 19,000 credits) so I tend to save rather than spend.  But I do look for big time cards now and then and recently I found one I wanted - a Tom Brady 2000 Quantum Leaf rookie.  It's a $40 Book Value card so I figured it would sell for a lot, and the auction was pretty poorly pictured (a terrible cell phone pic) and listed (the title was "Tom Brady" and the description just said "Football rookie card Tom Brady") so I thought I had a good chance at a deal.  Of course so did many other smart buyers, and before I knew it this thing was going up and up and had tons of watchers.  Whoops.

But like I said, I had 30,000 credits.  And as a Pats fan, Tom Brady has played in (and won) many of the greatest games of my fan lifetime.  I truly consider him one of the best QB's of all time, and I had yet to pick up a rookie card of his, since the cheapest ones are usually $10 delivered on Ebay, and those ones aren't as cool as his Quantum Leaf.  So I was all in on this one, for better or worse.

I ended up paying 9,550 credits for the card, which if you follow the 300 credits = one dollar ratio (what you pay for credits if you buy them) means I paid means I paid the equivalent of $31.83 for this card.  An overpay (especially given the condition, as you'll see)?  Sure.  But now I have a rookie card of Tom Brady...can't complain about that!

Front:
Not too shabby other than those weirds white lines cutting into the surface.  At first I thought they were part of the design but I quickly realized they weren't, and so they kill the condition of this card were anyone to ever get it graded.  Of course I won't because I'm not about to resell this card ever, so that's fine by me.  But this card shines real neat in person - especially the word "rookie" which catches the light nicely.

The back:
I love the first sentence here - they couldn't have foreshadowed the future better if they tried - "A player (Brady) who always seems to come up big in clutch situations."  That's certainly been the line on Brady since he was drafted by the Pats, and I hope he continues that this year on the way to a Super Bowl!

I guess this post wasn't that different from a lot of my Listia auctions since it involved me placing a decent amount of credits on a poorly listed auction.  Once again I'm happy with the results, and so I'm sure I'll keep taking chances on Listia in the future!

  1. It looks like I have a long ways to go... so far I've saved 550 credits. It might buy me a Kurt Suzuki base card ;-)

  2. Haha keep on keepin' on Fuji! In the past three days I won a Subtraction skills book for a little over 200 credits, a Sean Burke jersey card for just under 500, and a Matt Schaub base RC for 499. I also picked up a DeSean Jackson rookie auto but that was...much more expensive.

Question for you though - have you gotten your 500 for finishing an auction yet? The first auction I did I said I would send someone a crappy base card and I set the auction for like 500,000 credits and 3 day length. Obviously it didn't sell, but upon completion Listia gives you another 500 credits. Which is fantastic!

    1. Lol... nope, haven't done that. But I might just do that right now. Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW... I have my eyes on some packs that end this morning. Hopefully I will end up winning them ;-)

    2. Good luck to you! I know a lot of packs sell for gobs of credits but sometimes you can get some for cheaper - I hope you win!

    3. Okay... you've officially got me addicted to Listia. I now have over 1500 credits and I just listed my first auction. I did what you recommended and listed an outrageous opening bid.

  3. Haha, success! My new trick since I have a ton of credits is to sort collectibles to "lowest price" and "free shipping" and then I go through all the 0 and 1 bids looking for stuff I like. A lot of stuff will eventually get bid past my max, but sometimes some of that stuff falls through the cracks and ends up being nice wins!

    1. As soon as I build up my credits, I'll have to try that out. Right now, it's more like a game for me to see how fast I can reach 2k credits.
