Patches Galore: Some Stuff I Actually Bought from COMC

After selling both of my batches on COMC, I had a ton of store credit to spend. I spent the first batch of credit on tons of Seneca Wallace needs and a few cool cards, and then had that delivered a mi casa. Batch two, and the remainder of that money, went more towards random excellence that caught my eye. And after getting the package today and opening it up, I have to say that this package is probably one of my favorites in a long time.

I know that sounds silly - it's COMC and I can see the images so surely I know what I'm getting. But seeing a scan is not the same as seeing a card, and with several of these cards the in person effect is 1000x better than the scan.

Prime example: 2004 Fleer Gridiron Heroes #GH-BL Byron Leftwich 05/50:
The card design itself is meh - lots of blank space. The player is meh - Leftwich didn't do much for the Jags, Falcons, or Bucs, and now he's a Pittsburgh Steeler (yuck!). But that patch...oh my goodness that patch is beautiful. So nice it deserves a close up:
Now I know the Jaguars are awful, just fired their coach, and may someday move to a different city due to years of terrible play. But I can't get enough of their logo patches. A few months back I posted an excellent Maurice Jones Drew card with an epic jaguar logo head in it that I traded for on a whim. Sadly I traded the MJD, and the empty hole in my relic/auto binder where it used to sit made me realize how awesome these logos really are.

Why Jags logo patches specifically? Jags jerseys have a full body Jaguarlogo in the bicep area of the jersey. The thing is outlined in black, and has yellow fur with black bits in it indicating spots. This alone is cool in a patch, as it's a very unique looking logo. But even better, sometimes cards include the black and white of the Jaguar ear. As you can see, my card above is from the left bicep Jaguar and looks to be the top of the Jaguars head. You can see the head top, plus an ear, plus a bit of the top of an eye. Add in the jersey color itself and that's a four color patch. Beautiful.

So needless to say, this one won't be going the way of MJD - I'm keeping it. And despite no affection for the Jaguars franchise, I may have to start a Jaguar logo patch collection. All the jaguar logo itself, hopefully as many cool heads as possible! We'll see if I start that up anytime soon.

In the meantime I'm okay just looking at all these cool patches though. I saw these because I actually picked up four separate incredible patches in this group of cards, with the next being a Pedro Martinez/Javier Vazquez/Randy Johnson Montreal Expos triple relic, 06/47:
This card is INSANE. I showed off a Braves Big 3 version of this card a few weeks back, and I still like that card but it was real pricey. This card cost me just $7.50 though, and features two surefire future Hall of Famers and...Javier Vazquez. I know Vazquez brings the value down for most, but I actually liked the guy for his non Yankee career, and even for his Yankee career a bit since he was awful there. Besides, his patch isn't the real awesome one. Johnson's is a nice two color from a number piece, and then Pedro's is an insane 3 color (the red stitching is down the far left side) with all sorts of stitching marks. I love weird teams (and the Expos were certainly a weird team), I obviously love Pedro being a Sox fan, mentioned Vazquez above, and who didn't dig the Big Unit? A beautiful card, and I'm curious to see who else is in the set (hopefully some other amazing pitching trios!)

Edit: I looked on Ebay - Found a nice Dodgers one of Shawn Green/Ron Cey/Kevin Brown and a Reds trio of Eric Davis/Deion Sanders/Aaron Boone.

Speaking of other awesome Red Sox pitchers in non-Sox uniforms, here's a Curt Schilling patch I picked up:
Again, wow, what a patch. The pieces are two of the letters from Arizona - I think specifically the N going into the A. Whichever they are, they're awesome, and this card is a nice complement to my other Curt Schilling jersey card that I picked up from BA Benny a while back.

The fourth and final patch card would be my favorite if not for the Jaguar patch. Even with the Jag patch though, it's pretty damn cool, mostly because it's a sweet patch of my favorite current NBA player, Ray Allen:
COMC's scan of this card was a little wonky and make it look as if it had four colors. This one only has three, but with four breaks in it it is still super awesome. The patch is part of the lettering from a road Sonics jersey, which explains all the stitching. I also think this card is especially neat since its a Sonics card and they don't exist anymore (just like the Expos card above haha).

That does it for patches, but not for the package. I also picked up two Seneca Wallace needs. First the highest numbered card I still needed, which is/550:
This is one of the cards from 51/550 to 550/550 in the run, which weren't auto'd. I already had an auto'd version, shown below:
Can you imagine if these had been hand signed instead? Could've been cool, and this could be a good card for a Seneca ttm someday if I ever try.

My other Seneca card is his 2003 Topps card, the Black parallel version:Though I don't care about it, this one is #15/150, which was Seneca's jersey number. So that's neat.

And finally, since I had $0.30 left over, I purchased a Daniel Ray Herrera card from the site:
Random I know, but if you'll recall I went to a Reds-Cubs game a while back and got in person autos from Tom Gorzelanny, Logan Ondrusek, and Danny here. I had cards for Tom and Logan but nothing for Herrera, and so now I finally do and I can put it and his auto back to back in my binder. Which looks awesome! Someday maybe I'll show it off hahaha.

gcrl blog bat around: Cards that I used to own

So gcrl proposed we all write about cards we used to own, whether we miss them or otherwise.  I decided to post about a few, some I don't really miss and others I do.

Starting with the one I miss the least, we've got the 1973 Topps Mike Schmidt RC I used to own:
This card was a huge piece of my collecting history - it was my first "steal" (at 75 cents when I was a kid) and, with two Ken Griffey Jr. cards, was the longest tenured card in my collection for a long time.

I don't miss it because of the collecting history it continued to make for me.  I traded it for my first set of customs, which came out awesome.  And then one of those customs became my best TTM ever...which is doubly awesome.  So as great as this Schmidt card was in my collection for 15-ish years...it has done even better stuff for my collection since.  If only all cards we moved brought on as much awesomeness.

One card I miss some, but not that much, is my Byron Leftwich Jaguars patch:
I sold it a few years ago at a flea market for like $10.  It was a profit, and at the time the money was nice, but I sometimes wish I had this back.

Two other cards I sold that day, however, I miss more.  These two:
I love Ray Allen, and that was a real nice patch card /75.  I made a profit on it (again think I sold for $10), but I've never seen a patch that nice close to the same price range since then.  So I miss that card (I think I was okay with selling it since he was on the Heat at the time).

As for the Expos card...man...selling that card hurt then and it hurts now too.  I rationalized it in that I was getting $20 and that I didn't really collect any of the 3 guys on the card, but a Pedro patch that nice combined with a Randy Johnson that nice combined with a Javy Vazquez number patch, all on the same card, AND it's an Expos card (yay dead franchises) - that wasn't worth giving up.  This is probably the #1 card I wish I still had, and proof that you always need to be sure it's worth the money when you're selling to make some quick funds.

If the Expos card and Ray Allen card have any competition for most missed card, I'd say the MJD patch card #'d 32/50 would be it:
Back when I dabbled in Jaguars patches, this was a huge get.  It's got a cool college piece, it's got an amazing NFL piece (and an okay one), it's #'d to his jersey number, and it's MJD, a pretty cool guy.  I only gave it up because the biggest MJD collector on Blowout was willing to trade me a nice Seneca Wallace plus a bunch of other hits for it.  And while I did get some cool stuff in the deal, none of the cards were as cool as this piece, and if I had a time machine I'd go back, turn down the deal, and just wait out the Seneca card on Ebay.

Quads from COMC Part 3 of 3

Here is the final quad from my most recent COMC purchase, featuring a group of four Ravens.  Let's get right to it!
The top guy on this card was a Ravens legend of sorts, Todd Heap.  Being a late first round pick (in 2001) puts those kind of expectations on a guy, and Heap responded by setting the franchise mark for touchdowns (with 41) and finishing 2nd in franchise history in receptions and yards.  He somehow only went to two Pro Bowls (2002 and 2003), which speaks more to the talent of guys like Tony Gonzalez and Rob Gronkowski than it does to Heap's ability level.  Injuries did hamper Heap occasionally, but overall he had five seasons of 50+ receptions, six seasons of 500+ yards, and five seasons of 5+ touchdowns.  Nothing to bad at all, and though Heap finished his career with two injury plagued years with the Cardinals, he will always be remembered as a Raven by most football fans.

Obafemi Ayanbadejo has a pretty awesome name (given to him by his Nigerian father), and is the brother of fellow former NFLer Brendon Ayanbadejo, whom he played with on several teams.  The Ayanbadejos are both probably known better for their pro-gay rights stance (Brendon more vocal than Obafemi), but both were pretty good athletes as well.  Obafemi was a hybrid back who debuted with the 1998 Vikings after being undrafted by them a year earlier.  He was only given one game to showcase some special teams skills, but those skills must have seemed pretty impressive, as the Ravens immediately snatched Ayanbadejo out of free agency when the Vikings dropped him in 1999.  Obafemi played quite well over the next three years, catching 20+ passes a season and adding some success in the ground game as well (and winning that 2000 Super Bowl ring).  In 2001 the Ravens also signed Brendon to their team, marking the first year the two brothers would play with one another.

Obafemi did not get to play with his brother in 2002, as a 2001 toe injury caused the Ravens to cut him and Ayanbaedjo was not able to catch on with another team for the entirety of 2002.  In 2003, however, the Dolphins signed both brothers, and Obafemi contributed decently in his one year in Miami.  After being cut again, Obafemi signed on with the Cardinals in 2004, and spent the next three years accumulating his final NFL stats in the desert, including a career high three touchdowns in 2004.  Ayanbaedjo would've continued his career with the Chicago Bears in 2007 (along with his brother, who was by then a Bear), but he was suspended four games by the league for using a banned substance, and was cut once his suspension was up, effectively ending his NFL career.

Chris Redman had a tough go of it in Baltimore as a third round pick in 2000.  He won a Super Bowl ring that year, but saw little playing time behind vets Trent Dilfer and Tony Banks.  In 2001 both of those QBs were gone, but replacements Elvis Grbac and Randall Cunningham took all of the snaps in their stead, again relegating Redman to the bench.  Redman finally got some playing time in 2002 and was somewhat of a mixed bag, with a 7:3 TD:INT ratio but only a 53% completion percentage.  The Ravens had seen enough and drafted Kyle Boller, whom Redman backed up during the 2003 campaign before being released.

From 2004 to 2006 Redman bounced around the league, spending time with the Patriots, Titans, and in the AFL.  Then, in 2007, the Falcons signed him as a backup after trading Matt Schaub to the Texans (was it really that long ago?).  This was the year that Michael Vick was suspended for his dog-fighting issues, so Redman entered into a QB carousel that included former Lion Joey Harrington and former Jaguar Byron Leftwich.  Redman initially was the third string QB, but injury and ineffectiveness led to Redman earning four starts in 2007, with a slightly better completion percentage and the same stellar TD:INT ratio.  So when the Falcons drafted Matt Ryan in 2008, Redman was kept around as the backup, and he served that role well (including two spot starts in 2009) for the next four years before retiring from the NFL.

Finally we have Travis Taylor, who had huge expectations placed on his shoulders as the 10th overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft.  That made him the third WR picked in a fairly deep WR draft (deep in that there were a lot of good WRs picked, though a ton of the 1st and 2nd rounders flamed out fairly quickly), so the team hoped he would help their defensively strong squad into a more balanced team.  This didn't really come to fruition, and in five years with the Ravens he caught 204 balls for 2,758 yards and and 15 touchdowns.  Taylor did show occasional flashes, but it wasn't enough for Baltimore, who released him after the 2004 season.  Taylor then bounced around between several teams, including two years with the Vikings, one game in Oakland, one game in with the Rams, and several inactive weeks on the rosters of the Panthers and Lions.  His Vikings years actually weren't bad at all, with 50+ receptions and 600+ yards each year, but again it was an issue of Taylor not living up to the expectations set by his college career and high draft status.

Who wins the card? I think it has to be Todd Heap here, easily.  I do like how Chris Redman carved out a nice little career for himself despite few opportunities, but Heap is a local legend, so he's an easy pick.

Quad Patches continued...the Jacksonville Jaguars back when they were decent!

Remember when the Jaguars were an expansion team going deep into the playoffs?  Well those days are long gone...today the team is all Chad Henne and Justin Blackmon and John Cyprien and bad vibes.  But they used to be pretty good.  I remember them for a great defense and then a few steady offensive veterans that kept the ship moving.  This card captures all four of the guys I remember - Keenan McCardell, Mark Brunell, Jimmy Smith, and Fred Taylor, which is pretty cool.
Keenan McCardell is a name that kids these days are going to forget, and it's a shame because he was actually quite good.  He was a 12th round pick in the 1991 draft by the Washington Redskins, which was the last round back then.  8 guys were picked after McCardell, and none of them played a single game in the NFL.  So for McCardell to have more career receptions and receiving yards than any other guy in the class (which includes Herman Moore and Ed McCaffrey) is crazy impressive.  Even more impressive - he never played a game with the Redskins...and didn't even play at all until 1992.

McCardell spent his true first four seasons in Cleveland, and really broke out in 1995 with 700+ yards in 5 games started.  In the offseason he was signed by the Jaguars, and he spent the next 6 years dominating as part of the "Thunder and Lightning" duo with Jimmy Smith, including making the Pro Bowl in 1996.  He eventually moved on to the Buccaneers in 2002, and won a Super Bowl (where he had two touchdown receptions) and made a Pro Bowl in his two years there.  That 2003 season would be his last great one, as McCardell then had four okay years (three in San Diego, one in Washington) before retiring following the 2007 season.  16 year career, 16th all time in receptions, 27th in receiving yards - that's all way more than I expected.  So kudos to you Keenan!

Mark Brunell was mentioned in a previous post, but it's interesting to see how his tenure in Jacksonville ended.  I'd blame the offensive line a bit - Brunell led the league in sacks in 2001 after almost doing so in 2000.  By 2003 Byron Leftwich was drafted and Brunell was moving on to greener pastures.  It's crazy what a bad offensive line can do to a quarterback.

Jimmy Smith was the Lightning part of that Thunder and Lightning duo, and man was he crazy good.  But it almost didn't happen.  He was a 2nd round pick by the Cowboys in 1992, and like McCardell he is the career leader in many WR categories for his class (beating out Carl Pickens, Robert Brooks, and Torrance Small among others).  Unfortunately Smith broke a leg and then had a near fatal infection in response to an emergency appendectomy.  He was cut by the Cowboys and later the Eagles, and only found a team when his Mom sent some press clippings of past highlights to the Jaguars.  But that did it, and Smith spent the next 11 years as one of the league's best WR threats with 5 Pro Bowl nods.  18th in receptions and receiving yards, so you can see how he would outshine McCardell a little bit.  He was pretty darn good!

Last but not least, Fred Taylor was 1998 1st round pick who, as you probably guessed, was the best RB of his draft class like Smith and McCardell (beating our Ahman Green, Curtis Enis, and Robert Edwards among others).  Taylor's first four years in the league gave him a reputation as an injury risk, as he played just 40 of 62 games due to various ailments.  He was a yardage and touchdown machine though, and also stayed fairly healthy in his next 7 years in Jacksonville to cement his place as a franchise great.  He made a Pro Bowl in 2007 but appeared to slow a step in 2008, leading to Jacksonville letting him go.  The Patriots picked him up and let him do the RB by committee thing for two years before Taylor called it a career.  Still, 13 years for an "injury risk" back is pretty impressive, and really shows how tough Taylor truly was!

Who wins the card?  Man, this is a tough one.  There's a decent argument to be made that these are the four most notable Jaguars, at least offensively, in team history.  I think my choice has to be Jimmy Smith, though I give mad respect to Keenan McCardell for excelling in Smith's shadow for so long.

COMC Sweetness, Part 1 of 2

I bought four awesome cards from COMC the other day on the cheap, all because one was a new Seneca Wallace card I needed.  They just arrived today so I rescanned them, and man am I glad I did!

The first card I grabbed was one of Alvis Whitted, #'d 008/275. I know what most of you are saying - Alvis Who?  But for me, this is the third BEAUTIFUL Jaguars patch for my little collection:
Per usual, I'll provide  a comparison so you know where the patch is from.  Here's your typical Jaguar shoulder patch, zoomed in on the head:

And here's a super close-up (and super small, sorry) image of the back teeth/ear:

That's what my patch looks like:
I love how exact the spots are on these Jaguars - they show up in the same exact spots every single time on every single patch.  That's dedication.  Although I am a little confused about the yellow over the ear.  It seems to match the logo I found well since it splits up the black, but my Leftwich looks different.  Strangeness all around.

I was psyched however to finally see this in hand, because I didn't know part of the leg showed up here as well!  It's that light yellow kind of circular area to the right of the mouth - that's the upper muscle of the left leg.  It almost kind of adds a fourth color to the patch since the coloring is slightly different, which I love!

Also I have patch #4 on the way.  And I don't even care about the Jaguars.  And they no longer have Jaguars on their uniforms.  I think I have a problem!

Card #2 makes more sense in terms of my life.  It's a Patriot, and now just any Patriot, it's J.R. Redmond.  Again, for most of you, J.R. Who?  But for me, he (and Jermaine Wiggins) are two guys whom without the Patriots could NEVER have won their first Super Bowl against the Rams.  Redmond had a huge catch for a first down where he got out of bounds - without him Kurt Warner and company were likely raising the championship hardware in overtime.

Here's the patch.  It cost me a bit for a J.R. Redmond patch, but it's 4 colors and I've never seen anything near this nice from him otherwise.  It's #'d 053/350:

Again a comparison (I LOVE these haha).  I couldn't find a good Redmond comparison since he was never a big seller in the jersey department, but here's a Richard Seymour jersey to demonstrate a typical jersey from that time period:

Zooming in terribly, here's what the corners of the jersey numbers look like, i.e. the slight bends in the bottom of the 9 or 3:

And here of course is my patch:

So I can't pin down the exact location of this patch on a Redmond jersey, but I know it came from some bend in his numbering.  I'm going to say it's from the top of the 1 in 21 just to pick a point.  Regardless, I'm just psyched I have a 4 color jersey of a guy most people couldn't even pick out of a lineup.*

* For the record, my brothers are two of the guys who could pick him out of a lineup.  As I mentioned on this blog many moons ago, one of my few non-card pieces of memorabilia is an 8X10 autographed in person by J.R. Redmond.  He was at the same game as my brothers and they ran into them and he chatted with them and signed a photo.  Even before that he was one of my favorite Pats of all time...that just added to the excellence!

Active Seneca Wallace/High End Seahawks Collectors (My Competition)
:
- Seahawcla (High-end Seahawks Collector) has one card that I still need (Contenders Championship Ticket 1/1).  His website link no longer works.

- Royals and Randoms (blogger) still collects Seneca Wallace cards (and ISU alumni in general).  He has nothing I need but he's an awesome dude, so feel free to send stuff I don't need his way!

- Reader Casey also has a pretty sweet collection going so far!

1/1's that I have somewhat tracked down:
2003 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket #133 (jdub originally had this card and then sold it to Seahawcla for $299, who is holding on to it. jdub's scan can be found here)
